Worker Rights

All workers and service providers have the right to:

  1. Fair Treatment – Respectful, dignified, and safe work environment.
  2. Clear Work Agreements – Duties, hours, and pay must be agreed before starting.
  3. Fair Pay – At least the National Minimum Wage where applicable.
  4. Safe Working Conditions – Necessary tools, protective equipment, and safe practices.
  5. Privacy – Personal information must be protected and not shared without consent.

Employer Responsibilities

Employers and businesses are expected to:

  1. Act Lawfully and Fairly – Comply with South African labour and business laws.
  2. Provide Clear Job Details – Duties, hours, pay, and expectations must be transparent.
  3. Pay on Time – Workers must be paid as agreed and in full.
  4. Ensure Safety – Provide safe working conditions and necessary tools/equipment.
  5. Respect Privacy – Do not ask for unnecessary personal information or engage in harassment.

Disputes and Unfair Labour Practices

You are entitled to refer all your disputes and unfair labour practices to the CCMA – The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration.

The CCMA handles a wide range of labour-related cases, including:
 
  • Unfair dismissals.
  • Wage disputes.
  • Discrimination and harassment in the workplace.
  • Termination disputes.
  • Disagreements over working conditions.
  • Other issues relating to employment rights as outlined in the Labour Relations Act.
